What is Child Support?

Even if parents are separated, they each have a financial responsibility for their child or children.

Child support is generally paid by one parent to the other, but sometimes both parents have a child support liability. Child support can be paid by agreement or a child support assessment.

Reaching an Agreement

The law says that separated parents must try to reach an agreement about parenting arrangements for their child or children before going to court. There are exceptions to this law, such a domestic violence and urgency.

Our lawyers can take your matter to court if no agreement is reached or if there are specific reasons to do so, such as urgency. (An urgent situation may arise, for example, where your ex-partner wants to take the child or children interstate to live without your permission).

When Our Lawyers Can Help

Maleys Barristers & Solicitors can assist you in child support matters. Instances where we can assist include matters where paternity is disputed, both parents wish to reach a child support agreement and when you wish to lodge an objection to a child support assessment.
